Question by acessdeneyed: USB Data transfer cable?
I got a Garmin nüvi270 for Christmas. When I connect it to my computer it powers itself down. Customer support told me this happens because I am using an incompatible USB cable. Upon further prodding he told me the cable I am using must not be a “data transfer” cable and suggested I buy a cable from Garmin because USB cables from PDAs and cell phones don’t work since they are not “data transfer cables”.
This sounds like a bunch of bull to me. I wasn’t aware there was more than one type of USB cable. Anyone know anything about this? Should I call back and insist they find a real solution?

Answer by Paul V This does sound like bovine excrement – mini USB is mini USB.
however, from Personal experience, some mini USB cables work – some do not.
best one to use with a picky device is a short, fat cable.

Question by Organman: Garmin Nuvi 200 problem?
I got a Garmin Nuvi 200 for Christmas. After one use the screen says “No detailed maps found that support routing. The Nuvi cannot be used without them” I can’t get past that screen. I tried calling customer service and after waiting a half hour was told that I had to talk to the tech dept. and that would be at least another hour on hold!? I’m considering taking it back. It was purchased at Walmart – I never shop there, they sell crap and this is another example. I suspect that the unit was made in China with pirated software and when it connected to the satellite the jig was up so it ‘turned into a pumpkin’. Help!
chogopui didn’t read the whole question. The device worked. The maps were obviously in it. It was used for an hour / 25 mile trip then it crashed. There was no cable in the box to connect it to a computer, just to the cigarette lighter to power it.
There was no CD included with the device either.

Answer by truth! I have a Garmin Nuvi 200W and it works just like what GPS should. Did you go and look at the site and see if you can get your problem fix? I believe you should be able to download map updates online. I am not a Walmart shopper but one thing about the stores is that they guarantee 100%.

I live in Chicago. If I am somewhere, and I want to find the closest entrance to 90E or I88 or 294S how the heck do I get this thing to understand????? Even if I put in 294 in the street name it has no idea. It recognizes “routes” like if I put 59 in the street name it will give me route 59, but what about major highways? Does anyone know? Owner’s manual is useless & customer support on the phone is 30 min. wait. Thanks!!!!!
i know i need address to address but sometimes if you just type in the street or the city, it will give you the easiest way to get to that street. it’s hard cuz in Chgo everything is “Interstate” and I don’t think this dum thing understands “I” or Interstate. thanks!!!

Question by i.am.me.: Problems with Garmin nuvi. Can you help?
i got a GPS for christmas and it was working fine when i got it but now it won’t turn on. Any idea whats wrong? It’s a Garmin nuvi 260w. I plugged it in to the car to charge it and i know the fuse is fine. the manual says to hit the reset button on the bottom but there is nothing there that i can see.
What can i do to make this thing work again? I am on hold with the customer support people right now. (wait time of 30 – 45 min. Arggh)
where is the reset button? there is only the one button on top to turn it on. i couldn’t see any buttons on the bottom (or anywhere else)

Answer by boilerette72 try the reset button. Hold it down for a few. i have had that happen before and resetting worked. It may erase any data you have in it.

Our Garmin Nuvi 1100 gets a Glitch This is out first Garmin product purchase, and it worked great for almost a month. Then we experienced the glitch Garmin talks about in there voluntary recall of several of its products. Apparently they discovered a Firmware glitch that produces this problem. Most units have not had this happen and a simple, FREE, downloaded update will fix it quickly. Those of us that are having the worst case senario issues shown in the video however, must send the unit back for repair. Garmin Customer support has been good so far. I am trying to obtain an RMA so I can send it back for repair or replacement. As I talked about though and have been learning from others that have had this issue…is that Garmin wants me to pay to ship the unit back to them for the repair. This just does not seem right to me…
